European media recently revealed the message Diogo Jota sent to his wife before passing away on July 3. Meanwhile, the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) and the Portuguese Football Federation said they will do something special for Diogo Jota at the upcoming 2025 Women’s EURO.

Diogo Jota died in a traffic accident in Zamora province, Spain. The accident occurred at km 65 of the A-52 road, near the city of Palacios de Sanabria. According to initial police information, the car carrying the 28-year-old Liverpool star and his brother, Andre (26 years old) flew off the road before catching fire. Witnesses said the car was engulfed in flames and the fire spread to nearby vegetation. Both were confirmed dead at the scene. Immediately, this information shocked the world football community as Diogo Jota is a famous player of Portugal and Liverpool. The 28-year-old striker is enjoying a special summer vacation, after winning the 2025 Nations League with the Portuguese team.

The tragic passing of Diogo Jota

Notably, Diogo Jota passed away just over 10 days after his wedding with his girlfriend Rute Cardoso, leaving behind three young children: Denis (2021), Duarte (2023) and a baby girl born in 2024. Diogo Jota and Cardoso knew each other for 13 years before getting married. The two were praised as a beautiful couple and had an admirable love story. Cardoso always supported Diogo Jota in his career decisions. Meanwhile, Diogo Jota was affectionate and always loyal to Cardoso. Whenever he had time off, he often took his children to Spain and neighboring areas for vacation with Cardoso.

A BOLA (   Portugal) revealed that after getting married, Diogo Jota left Cardoso a comment on Instagram. Sadly, this became the last message he left for his wife. Diogo Jota wrote: “My dream has come true”. In response, Cardoso expressed: “No, you are the lucky one”.

UEFA and the Portuguese Football Federation will do something special

Hours after Diogo Jota and his brother Andre were confirmed dead, UEFA announced a minute’s silence would be observed before the start of all matches at the women’s EURO 2025 football championship, which will kick off on July 4 and 5.

UEFA said: “On behalf of the European football community, we are deeply saddened to learn of the tragic passing of Diogo Jota and his brother Andre Silva. We would like to send our condolences to his family, friends, teammates and all those affected by this heartbreaking loss.”

In addition to the above move, UEFA said it has now approved the request of the Portuguese women’s team to wear black in their opening match against Spain.  A BOLA  wrote: “The Portuguese Football Federation sent a request and UEFA immediately approved it. They did not hesitate to allow the players of the Portuguese women’s national team to use black, as a gesture to remember the tragic deaths of Diogo Jota and Andre.”

World football has just received a big shock when Diogo Jota, a star of Liverpool and the Portuguese national team, passed away in a serious traffic accident in Spain.

According to Marca, the incident occurred at km 65 near Sanabria, Zamora province, northwestern Spain. This sad incident occurred just two weeks after Jota married his long-time girlfriend Rute Cardoso in Porto (Portugal).

Witnesses at the scene said the car carrying Jota and his brother Andre suddenly lost control, veered off the road and burst into flames. The fire quickly spread, completely burning the car and part of the surrounding trees, causing a serious fire. When rescuers arrived, both victims were no longer alive.

The news of Jota’s passing has shocked the football world. Born in 1996 in Porto, Jota is one of the outstanding players of the new generation of Portuguese football.

Jota joined Liverpool in 2020 from Wolves for a transfer fee of 44.7 million Euros and quickly made his mark at Anfield. Even during the period when The Kop owned the trio of Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino, Jota still knew how to leave his mark. There was a time when this striker was considered the “golden boy” of Liverpool.

Not only known as a player with great technique and sharp goal-scoring instinct, Jota is also highly appreciated for his dedication and professionalism. He always maintains an exemplary image in the eyes of his teammates as well as fans, being an example of dedication but also humility off the field.

Jota’s sudden passing has come as a huge shock not only to his family but also to football fans in general. In Portugal, where Jota was considered a national pride, there is also a great deal of grief over this great loss.
