Food Network star Anne Burrell was reportedly in “great spirits” prior to her sudden death.
The Worst Cooks in America star took the stage for her debut improv comedy show in Brooklyn on Monday, June 16, hours before news of her death broke. People reported via a source that Burrell was “so great” on stage and “so happy” during her performance.
A second insider told the publication that the chef was “having a blast” at the improv show. The source noted that everyone is “shocked and confused” regarding the nature of her death.
Burrell was found dead at age 55 in her Brooklyn home on Tuesday, June 17.
“Anne was a beloved wife, sister, daughter, stepmother, and friend — her smile lit up every room she entered,” her family shared in a statement to Us Weekly. “Anne’s light radiated far beyond those she knew, touching millions across the world. Though she is no longer with us, her warmth, spirit, and boundless love remain eternal.”
Us confirmed on Tuesday that Burrell was pronounced dead “at the scene” after authorities responded to a 911 call reporting “an unconscious and unresponsive” female. The cause of death has not yet been reported and NYPD shared that an investigation into Burrell’s death “remains ongoing.” The New York City Fire Department also told several outlets that the 911 call suggested Burrell might’ve suffered cardiac arrest.
Burrell is survived by her mother, Marlene, and sister Jane along with husband Stuart Claxton (whom she married in October 2021) and his son, Javier.
The celebrity chef rose to fame following her appearance on multiple Food Network shows, including Iron Chef America and Worst Cooks in America. The network issues a statement on Tuesday as well.
“We are deeply saddened to share the news that beloved chef, Anne Burrell, passed away this morning,” they shared via Instagram. “Anne was a remarkable person and culinary talent — teaching, competing and always sharing the importance of food in her life and the joy that a delicious meal can bring. Our thoughts are with Anne’s family, friends and fans during this time of tremendous loss.”
Prior to her death, Burrell was open with her Instagram followers about her budding improv career.
“OK … sooooooo a little update into the ‘Anne Burrell’ world. I know I have been kinda quiet of late. BUT I am taking ‘Improv for Actors’ at @secondcitynyc!!!” she captioned a March Instagram post. “Can I just say it is SO much fun and I am learning so SO much!!! It really helps me get out of my shell… as if I needed that!!”
